According to police, the rapper JayDaYoungan from Louisiana was shot and killed on Wednesday in Bogalusa.
Javorius Scott, a musician well known for the song “23 Island” and other songs, was killed in a shooting that happened just before 6 o’clock, according to Bogalusa police.
Kenyatta Scott Sr., another individual identified by police as a close relative, suffered injuries but was in stable condition, according to authorities.
Around 5:50 p.m., police arrived to a complaint of a gunshot and discovered one victim had been gravely hurt, while the second victim had been brought to a hospital, according to police.
Later, the police department named JayDaYoungan as one of the shooting victims and said that he passed away as a result of his wounds.
Late on Wednesday, an inquiry for comment from Atlantic Records, which had formerly handled the rapper, went unanswered.
It wasn’t immediately clear how the shooting took place in further detail. Police did not make any arrests public.
Around 7 o’clock, a car was shot, and police said they thought the two shootings might be connected. The shooting in that incident didn’t hit anyone.
The 2019 album “Misunderstood” by JayDaYoungan peaked at No. 43 on the Billboard Top 200, and the 2020 album “Baby23” peaked at No. 46.
JayDaYoungan was raised in Bogalusa, a town of around 10,600 people on the Mississippi border north of New Orleans.
In a statement, Bogalusa Mayor Wendy O’Quin-Perrette referred to the shooting as senseless and expressed her condolences to the victims. She claimed she urged the Louisiana State Police to support neighborhood law enforcement.
