Temilade Openiyi, better known as Tems, was born on June 11, 1995, in Lagos, Nigeria, to a Nigerian mother and a British father. Her father abandoned her mother when she was five years old, thus she was raised by her single mother.
She attended Dowen College in Lekki after completing her basic school in Lagos. She subsequently relocated to Johannesburg to get a degree in Economics at a South African institution.
Tems was raised in a modest household and found her musical ability after joining a local chorus. During her youth, she made the first steps toward becoming a great musician, recording songs with her school choir and practicing on her brother’s guitar.
When she questioned her talents, her music instructor pushed her to sing with her true voice, according to a documentary produced by MU Narratives.
